The Trust's training team consists of a Trustee-Training Officer, Justin Olver
(Senior Coxswain), assisted by other members of the crew with many years of
‘on water experience’ who plan and present a comprehensive training program.
This combines theory work, for which Avon & Somerset Constabulary Training School
and Kestrel Managed Workspaces have kindly provided the use of meeting rooms,
followed up with practical on the water sessions.
Training is aimed at bringing trainees up to the standards required for the RYA Powerboat level
2, and acts as a refresher for those who may have boated before. Continuous training ensures
standards are maintained leading to Advanced Level and beyond. All our RYA assessments are
carried out by independent examiners away from local waters, thus ensuring our crews are of
the highest standard.
Being part of a lifeboat crew requires commitment, teamwork and trust, so that training is
continuous and often repetitive; we encourage all crew to present some training sessions as
this expands their knowledge and confidence.
We may often be seen on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings out in the unique tidal waters
of the Bristol Channel practising general boat handling & rescue skills, and at times we may
be observed just going up and down the channel or rivers. This importantly expands local
knowledge and understanding of the changeable local conditions.
