The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat

Training

The Trust's training team consists of the Training Officer, Dave Hodges (Senior Coxswain), and 4 Trainers, who are all Coxswains with many years of 'on water experience' between them, who plan and deliver a comprehensive training program. This combines theory work, for which Avon & Somerset Constabulary Training School and Kestrel Managed Workspaces have kindly provided the use of meeting rooms, followed up with practical on the water sessions. All of the Trainers hold a RYA Powerboat Instructor's Certificate.

Training is provided to ensure the lifeboat crew and coxswains are well prepared to deal with any situation that arises on a shout. All trainees are put through the RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate. This gives all them a sound understanding of boat handling skills, and also acts as a refresher for those who may have boated before. Continuous training ensures standards are maintained leading to Advanced Level and beyond. All our RYA assessments are carried out by independent examiners away from local waters, thus ensuring our crews are of the highest standard.

Being part of a lifeboat crew requires commitment, teamwork and trust, so training is continuous and often repetitive; we encourage all crew to present some training sessions as this expands their knowledge and confidence.

We may often be seen on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings out in the unique tidal waters of the Bristol Channel practising general boat handling & rescue skills, and at times we may be observed just going up and down the channel or rivers. This importantly expands local knowledge and understanding of the changeable local conditions.
