The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat

Operational Structure

Operationally the launch of the lifeboat is controlled by a person known as the 'Launch Authority'. He has at least four deputies in order to cover working periods, holidays, weekends away etc. All these men have operated small craft in the Severn Estuary for many years and are well used to the shifting sands and fearsome tides to be encountered off Portishead which are awaiting the unwary or the unfortunate. The 'Deputy Launch Officers' have the final say as to whether the lifeboat will be launched in any particular circumstance and operate to set procedures sanctioned by the Trustees.

The crew are all volunteers and are called by pager after the Launching Officer or one of his deputies has sanctioned the launch. Whilst on service, the lifeboat station at Sugar Loaf Bathing Beach is manned by shore staff who will assist with the launching and recovering of the lifeboat as well as dealing with any persons brought ashore who may require Assistance.

Upon return from service or training exercise the lifeboat is always made ready for sea and is left in a state of instant readiness for the next emergency.

We are actively promoting a cadet section which we trust will encourage young people to take an interest in the lifeboat and we hope that they will become crew members and continue the service in their turn. Our present lower age limit is 17 (with parental consent). These younger members will be trained in boat handling skills, rope work, first aid and navigation, and most importantly, respect for the estuary and all its attendant dangers. It is intended that this should provide a pool of trained crew members for the future.

All crew members must pass stringent medical and eyesight tests previous to being accepted for comprehensive training and will be expected to work towards and obtain, Power Boat Certificates of Competency under Royal Yachting Association's Power Boat Scheme.
