The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat
Crew Structure

Broadly speaking, the crew are split into 3 categories:

Coxswain
The Coxswains are in command of the lifeboat when at sea. They are the people who get Portishead Lifeboat from A to B safely. Their local knowledge of the waters is extensive. All our Coxswains hold the internationally recognised RYA Advanced Powerboat ticket.

Crewmen
There are 2 crew seats on Portishead Lifeboat. All crewmen are able to act as either the Radio Operator or Navigator. The Radio Operator keeps in contact with the Coastguard, Avomnouth VTS, and any other ship or Authority she is working with. All crew hold a VHF/GMDSS licence. The Navigator is responsible for advising the Coxswain of the best way to get to any given position; working out routes, ETAs, and advising the Coxswain of any potential obstacles the lifeboat may pass en route. All crew hold an internationally recognised RYA Powerboat level 1 or 2 qualification.

Trainees
This is, of course where we all started! Trainees generally come from all walks of life, and with many different levels of experience. The training program put together by our Training Officers and Trustees provide a comprehensive and well structured path from Trainee to Crewman. This 'initial' training lasts roughly 12 months.
